Background of the study
Financial literacy has become a critical skill in the modern world, especially for young individuals preparing to navigate adult responsibilities. Secondary school students are at a crucial stage in their educational journey, where introducing financial literacy concepts can equip them with essential knowledge for making informed decisions about money, savings, investments, and financial planning. Despite its importance, many students in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas like Ilorin East Local Government Area, Kwara State, lack adequate access to financial education.

The advent of mobile technology has presented new opportunities for bridging this gap. With the increasing use of smartphones among young people, a mobile-based financial literacy app can deliver engaging and interactive content to students, enabling them to learn financial concepts at their own pace (Adeyemi & Yekini, 2023). This app will aim to provide practical knowledge on budgeting, saving, investing, and managing personal finances, empowering students to make informed decisions as they transition into adulthood.

Statement of the problem
Secondary school students in Ilorin East Local Government Area, Kwara State, lack access to adequate financial literacy education, which is essential for their personal development and future success. This study aims to design a mobile-based financial literacy app that will provide students with the necessary tools and knowledge to manage their finances effectively.

Objectives of the study

  1. To design a mobile-based financial literacy app for secondary school students in Ilorin East Local Government Area, Kwara State.

  2. To implement the app and ensure its usability for secondary school students.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of the app in enhancing students' financial knowledge and decision-making skills.

Research questions

  1. How effective is the mobile-based financial literacy app in improving students' financial knowledge?

  2. What impact does the app have on students' ability to make informed financial decisions?

  3. How do students perceive the usability and relevance of the mobile app in learning financial concepts?

Significance of the study
The mobile-based financial literacy app will equip students with vital knowledge that will help them manage their finances responsibly. It will provide an accessible and engaging platform for learning, potentially shaping the future financial behaviors of students and fostering a financially responsible generation.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study will focus on the design, implementation, and evaluation of the financial literacy app for secondary school students in Ilorin East Local Government Area, Kwara State. It will not extend to other regions or address other aspects of financial education.
